This digital painting is an exploration of the relationship between nature and urban development. The black rectangles in the corners represent the towering skyscrapers that dominate our cities, while the steel tree in the center symbolizes the natural world that is often pushed aside in the name of progress. The colorful splashes of paint represent the vibrancy and beauty of nature, even amidst the concrete and steel of the city. The steel tree also serves as a metaphor for how humanity has altered nature to fit their needs, but also how nature still persists and thrives even in the most unlikely of places.
In order to spend more time with his family, Kai Saarto (b. 1974) traded his successful career in journalism for the uncertain income of an artist. He paints exclusively on digital oils, with results that are virtually impossible to tell from a real oil paintings. Most of his artistic work is privately commissioned portraits, but he also has an ever expanding portfolio of prints. These are from various subjects, including street scenes, landscapes, military equipment and works inspired by video games. Kai Saarto lives in city of Turku, Finland, with his wife, sons and two crazy springer spaniels.
