Description
John is a 49-year-old homeless man who has been living on the streets for the past five years. He lost his job as a warehouse worker when the company he worked for went bankrupt, and he has been struggling to find work ever since. John has been unable to afford rent on his own and has been forced to rely on shelters and the kindness of strangers to get by.
These portraits capture the faces of a forgotten population, the homeless men who live on the streets of our cities. In the United States alone, there are over 500,000 people experiencing homelessness on any given night, and a significant portion of that population is made up of middle-aged men. These men have fallen on hard times, struggling with poverty, mental illness, addiction, or a combination of all three. They are often invisible to the rest of society, overlooked and ignored as they struggle to survive day by day.
But these portraits give these men a voice and a presence, reminding us of their humanity and the harsh realities they face. They remind us that homelessness is a complex problem, one that requires a multifaceted approach to address. It's not just a matter of providing a roof over someone's head, but also addressing the underlying issues that contribute to homelessness in the first place. These portraits serve as a call to action, urging us to do more to help our homeless neighbors and work towards a future where no one is left to fend for themselves on the streets.
