Description
Samantha is a 28-year-old homeless woman who has been living on the streets for the past year. She grew up in a small town and had a happy childhood, but she struggled with mental health issues as a teenager and eventually dropped out of high school.
After a series of failed relationships and jobs, Samantha found herself without a place to call home. She was forced to couch surf with friends and family for a while, but eventually, she ran out of options and ended up living on the streets.
These portraits capture the faces of a forgotten population, the homeless individuals who live on the streets of our cities. In the United States alone, there are over 500,000 people experiencing homelessness on any given night, and a significant portion of that population is made up of middle-aged men and women. These individuals have fallen on hard times, struggling with poverty, mental illness, addiction, or a combination of all three. They are often invisible to the rest of society, overlooked and ignored as they struggle to survive day by day.
But these portraits give these men and women a voice and a presence, reminding us of their humanity and the harsh realities they face. They remind us that homelessness is a complex problem, one that requires a multifaceted approach to address. It's not just a matter of providing a roof over someone's head, but also addressing the underlying issues that contribute to homelessness in the first place. These portraits serve as a call to action, urging us to do more to help our homeless neighbors and work towards a future where no one is left to fend for themselves on the streets.
